Every Aucklander has the conversation eventually, usually stationary on the Southern Motorway: what if we just left? Wellingtonians have it during the third consecutive week of northerlies. This list is for that conversation, held up against actual data rather than a half-remembered summer holiday.
We've filtered to towns of roughly 1,000 to 15,000 people. Big enough for a supermarket, a school and a functioning rugby club, small enough that the person at the Four Square counter learns your name whether you like it or not. Then we've ranked them on the same livability data as every other page on this site, because a small town deserves the same scrutiny as a city suburb, and frequently survives it better.
No romance, no cottage-core filter, no slow-living newsletter copy. Just the towns where the numbers still hold up after the moving truck has gone. Some of them will surprise you. The house price difference will not, and it's doing a lot of quiet persuading all the way down the list.
