Best Suburbs for Families

Top-rated suburbs for raising children, ranked by a combined score of school quality, safety, and green space.

Every suburb in New Zealand will tell you it's great for families. The real estate listing says it. The school newsletter says it. The bloke at the barbecue who bought in 2009 definitely says it. None of them are ranking anything. We are.

This list scores suburbs on three things that actually matter when you've got kids and a mortgage: school quality, safety, and how much green space sits within pram-pushing distance. No vibes, no "family-friendly atmosphere", no stock photo of a golden retriever on a lawn. Just the numbers, combined into a Family Score and sorted highest to lowest.

A few results will annoy people. Whitby, out in Porirua, currently outranks the entire Auckland eastern bays, which won't go down well in Saint Heliers. Selwyn District shows up four times, because flat land, new schools and cul-de-sacs are a quietly unbeatable combination. The usual leafy suspects are here too.

Scores refresh when the livability recompute runs, so positions shift. Treat this as a starting point, not scripture. Then go visit on a wet Tuesday in winter, which is the only honest way to judge anywhere in this country.
