Khandallah is a hill suburb in northern Wellington, around 6 km from the CBD by train and a bit longer by road if you don't know the back routes. It's been one of the city's established suburbs since the railway pushed up here in the 1880s, and the place wears its age well: weatherboard villas, mature gardens, narrow streets that make couriers swear, and the kind of slow-grown character that postwar subdivisions can't replicate.
Khandallah Park sits in the middle of the suburb, with bush walks running up Mount Kau Kau (445 metres). On a clear day the summit gives you Wellington Harbour, the city centre, and a fair stretch of the South Island. The Skyline Walkway joins the park to Karori one direction and Johnsonville the other.
The Khandallah Pool on Woodmancote Road is one of the last open-air community pools left in the country: a 25-metre pool, summer only, a proper holdover from when this was how council recreation worked. The Khandallah Trading Company on Ganges Road anchors the village shops: part grocer, part deli, part cafe, full local institution. Onslow College handles the secondary kids, and the train station handles everyone's commute.
