Grey District is built around Greymouth, the main town of the West Coast, where the Monteith’s brewery has been making beer since the gold-rush days and Shantytown recreates them for anyone curious. Lake Brunner sits inland, the rain comes in off the Tasman, and pounamu turns up in the rivers if you know where to look.

It’s the practical heart of the Coast, a working town with mining and fishing in its bones and some of the friendliest, most no-nonsense people you’ll meet. The prices are properly affordable, the scenery’s wild, and the pace is exactly as slow as you’d hope.
