Kaipara District

Kaipara is kumara country, with Dargaville happy to crown itself the capital, sitting beside one of the largest harbours in the southern hemisphere. Inland, the Waipoua forest shelters Tāne Mahuta, the giant kauri that’s been standing there a couple of thousand years and counting.

This is the quiet, rugged west of Northland: big harbour, big trees, black-sand beaches and farmland, with not a lot of crowds anywhere. It’s affordable, it’s unhurried, and it’s close enough to Auckland to be doable as a tree change without falling off the map entirely.
