The Mackenzie is the big-sky country: turquoise lakes, brown tussock, Aoraki standing over the lot, and a night sky so good they made it an official dark sky reserve. Those famous lupins are technically a weed, but try telling that to the tour buses at Tekapo.
This is high country, thin on towns and heavy on scenery. Tekapo and Twizel are the main spots, built for hydro schemes and now living off stargazers, skiers and anyone who’s seen the photos. It’s remote, it’s cold in winter, and the views genuinely earn the hype.
There are around 30 suburbs and localities across the district. This page puts them in one place so you can weigh them up: who lives where, what it costs to buy in, how the schools sit, and just how far you are from a decent supermarket.
Big country, dark skies and lakes that don’t look real. Browse the suburbs and see if the high life suits.
