Marlborough District

Marlborough is where the country’s sauvignon blanc comes from, and if you’ve ever had a glass of New Zealand white anywhere in the world, odds are it started here. Blenheim soaks up the sun, the Sounds wind off into the green, and Picton waves the ferries in and out.

It’s a district of two halves: the sun-drenched valleys full of vines down on the plains, and the maze of bays, inlets and bush-clad ridges out in the Marlborough Sounds. That second half explains the eye-watering suburb count, with hundreds of little waterside settlements you can only reach by boat or a very patient drive.
