Matamata-Piako District

Waikato · 26 suburbs

This district is where you’ll find Hobbiton, so Matamata has more or less become Middle-earth’s tourist office, complete with a themed information centre. Add Morrinsville’s painted cows, Tirau’s giant corrugated-iron sheep and dog, and Te Aroha’s old spa town under its mountain, and you’ve got a district that’s not short on personality.

Behind the attractions it’s serious dairy country, some of the richest farmland going, with tidy towns and a strong rural backbone. It’s central, affordable, and close enough to Hamilton and Tauranga to use both. The novelty’s fun, the farming’s the engine.

There are 26 suburbs and localities across the district. This page lays them out so you can compare without guessing: who lives where, what it costs, how the schools rate, and how far each spot really is from the bigger centres.

Hobbits, big cows and rich dairy land. Have a browse and see which corner suits.
