Ōtorohanga has declared itself the Kiwiana capital, and it commits: jandals, buzzy bees and pavlova celebrated about town, plus a kiwi house keeping the actual birds. It’s the gateway to the King Country, with the glowworm caves and limestone hills not far away.

It’s a small rural service town surrounded by farming country, the kind of place that’s unhurried, friendly and refreshingly cheap to live in. Close enough to Hamilton and Waitomo to never feel cut off, far enough out to keep its small-town soul. The Kiwiana theme is good fun, but the value is the real draw.
