Stratford leaned all the way into its name: streets named after Shakespeare characters and the only glockenspiel clock tower in the country, where Romeo and Juliet pop out four times a day to do their bit. It sits right at the foot of the mountain, near enough the centre of the region.

Beyond the literary theme it’s a tidy rural town surrounded by dairy country, with the mountain’s ring road running through and the slopes a short drive up. It’s small, friendly and properly affordable, the kind of place where the clock tower really is the main event, and that’s no bad thing.
