Tararua District

Tararua is the quiet eastern side of the ranges, where Dannevirke still flies its Scandinavian flag and the windfarms march along the tops like something out of a sci-fi film. It’s farming country, honest and unhurried, named after the range that walls it off from the rest of the lower North Island.

Dannevirke and Pahiatua do the heavy lifting, with Norsewood and a string of rural settlements filling in around them. The draw is space, a strong community, and house prices that make the cities look like a different planet. The wind, you get used to.
