Andersons Bay sits about 4 km southeast of central Dunedin, wrapped around its namesake bay on the Otago Harbour. Named after one of the earliest European settlers, James Anderson, who farmed the area from 1844. Te reo Maori name is Puketai. It's one of Dunedin's larger residential suburbs, anchored by the long retail strip along Andersons Bay Road.
The shopping spine runs from Cargill's Corner south to the Bay: a Countdown, the local McDonald's, BurgerKing, Liquorland, hardware, takeaways and so on. Practical rather than pretty, but it does the everyday job for the city's southeastern suburbs. Andersons Bay Thai is a long-running local favourite.
Andersons Bay School (founded in the 1860s) is one of Dunedin's older primary schools, with a strong family draw. Bayfield High School up the hill takes the older kids. Andersons Bay Cemetery on Musselburgh Rise is one of the oldest in Dunedin, with notable historical graves including a number of early Otago settlers.
Tomahawk Lagoon and Lawyers Head are a short drive over the hill, with some of Dunedin's better coastal walks. Across the harbour is Macandrew Bay and the Otago Peninsula, with the Royal Albatross Centre at Taiaroa Head about 25 minutes away.
