Living in Aranui
Aranui sits in eastern Christchurch, around 8 km from the central city and five minutes from the New Brighton sand, a state-built suburb of the 1950s and 60s that has carried more than its share and kept walking. Around 6,500 people live here, in one of the city's youngest and most Māori and Pasifika communities, where the social fabric is the genuine local infrastructure: the churches, the clubs, the aunties who run everything worth running.
The earthquakes hit this side of town hard, and the recovery asked patience of people who had already mastered it. The boldest response was educational: in 2017, four local schools combined into Haeata Community Campus, a single year 1-to-13 campus built new for the east, one of the most ambitious school projects in the country, and a statement that the rebuild meant the east too.
The daily geography is better than the reputation that lags it: the beach and pier at New Brighton are five minutes east, the Taiora QEII recreation centre's pools sit just north, and the city is 15 minutes west.
Aranui's story is community holding through everything the last decades sent. The houses are modest, the loyalty is not, and the sea air arrives free of charge from the east.
