Living in Ben Lomond
Ben Lomond is the mountain that defines Queenstown's skyline to the north, rising to 1,748 metres above the town, named by Scottish settlers who apparently looked at the Wakatipu basin, looked at their memories of home, and decided the mountain needed a familiar name for an unfamiliar magnitude. The locality named for it takes in the upper slopes of the Ben Lomond Scenic Reserve, the high tussock and rock country that most Queenstown visitors observe from below or from the gondola window.
The Ben Lomond Track is the mountain's main engagement, a full-day return from the Skyline complex that crosses the ridge from the gondola summit and climbs to the peak through snow tussock, scree and the kind of wind that lets you know you've left the valley. The views from the summit telescope the Wakatipu basin, the Remarkables, the ranges toward the Harris Mountains and, on clear days, a working geography lesson in every direction.
As a locality, Ben Lomond has no permanent residential population: this is conservation land, the terrain too steep and the elevation too committed for anything but the mountain itself. What it has is the track, the tussock and the Queenstown skyline's northern anchor, performing its role with the indifference of a very large hill that was here considerably before the gondola.
