Living in Cashmere
Cashmere is a hill suburb on the northern slopes of the Port Hills, around 5 km south of central Christchurch. It rises from the southern end of Colombo Street toward Pukeatua / Dyers Pass, with views over the city, the Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps that genuinely deliver on a clear day. Population around 6,900. Te reo Maori name is Te Iringa-o-Kahukura.
The local landmark is the Sign of the Takahē at the top of Hackthorne Road: a Tudor-style stone roadhouse designed by Harry Ell, started in 1918 and finally completed in 1949, more than a decade after Ell's death. It's part of his vision for a Summit Road system of rest houses linking Christchurch to Akaroa. Damaged in the 2011 earthquake and reopened in 2019 after a $2.8 million restoration, now operating as a café, function and wedding venue.
Above the suburb, Victoria Park runs into the Port Hills network with mountain biking, walking tracks and the Christchurch Adventure Park (opened 2016). The Sugarloaf transmission tower marks the high point.
The 2010 and 2011 earthquakes hit Cashmere hard, with rockfalls and slips closing parts of the upper streets for years. Recovery has been long and uneven, but the suburb has held its character.
