Caversham is a southern Dunedin suburb, around 3 km from the central city, on the route from the Octagon down through South Dunedin and out to the airport. It's a transition suburb between the central city and South Dunedin, with a long high street (Hillside Road becoming South Road) running through it and a settled residential character behind.
The local landmark is the Caversham Tunnel, opened in 1872 and the original rail link from Dunedin south to South Otago and Invercargill. The road tunnel above it (Caversham Valley) carries SH1 through the same gap, completed in 1956 and widened in 2014. Both still in heavy daily use.
Caversham has the Night n Day store, the local pharmacy, the Caversham Bowling Club and a mix of small businesses along South Road. The Caversham Community Hall and Caversham School (state co-ed primary) are the community anchors. Lookout Point above the suburb gives one of Dunedin's better southern views, over the city and out to the Pacific.
The suburb has gentrified gradually since 2010, drawing younger families for the affordable older housing stock and walking access to the central city. The villas hold up well, the upper-street views are genuinely good, and Caversham hasn't decided to be fashionable about it.
