Living in Churton Park
Churton Park is a northern Wellington suburb around 11 km from the central city, on the hill rising between Johnsonville and Glenside. It's one of Wellington's newer suburbs, built almost entirely from the 1980s onwards on what had been farmland, with a current population around 7,000 and a strong family-and-schools character that draws on the suburb's reputation for relative affordability by Wellington standards.
The Churton Park Shopping Centre on Halswater Drive is the local commercial anchor, with the New World Churton Park, the Churton Park Pharmacy, takeaways and a small mix of suburban retail. Built specifically for the surrounding subdivisions, with the kind of carpark layout that screams "1990s shopping centre".
Churton Park's elevation gives parts of the suburb genuinely impressive views: north to Tawa and beyond, east towards the harbour, and on clear days right out to the Tararuas. The streetscape is mostly 1980s and 1990s family housing on smaller sections than older Wellington suburbs, with infill townhouses arriving steadily.
Churton Park School (state co-ed primary) handles the local primary. Older students typically attend Onslow College in Johnsonville. State Highway 1 runs along the eastern edge of the suburb, which makes the central city a 15-minute drive.
