Living in Green Island

Green Island is a southwestern Dunedin suburb around 9 km from the central city, sitting on the flat south of Kaikorai Estuary. Despite the name, it's not an island and never was; the name comes from a historical green patch of farmland visible from the surrounding hills in the 19th century. The suburb has around 4,500 residents and an industrial-and-residential mix that gives it a different character to most of Dunedin's hill suburbs.

The Fresh Choice Green Island on Main South Road is the local anchor, drawing shoppers from the surrounding suburbs including Concord, Fairfield and Abbotsford. The Green Island Industrial Area to the south is one of Dunedin's main light-industrial zones, home to manufacturers, distributors and trade services.

Sims Park provides the local sports ground, with the Green Island Bowling Club and the local sports clubs based here. The Kaikorai Estuary walkway runs along the suburb's northern edge.

Green Island School (state co-ed primary) handles the local primary. Older students typically attend Kaikorai Valley College or central Dunedin schools. The Southern Motorway runs along the eastern edge of the suburb, which keeps central Dunedin a 12-minute drive away.
