Grenada Village is a small residential suburb in the northern hills of Wellington, on the eastern side of the Northern Motorway about 2 km north of Johnsonville and 12 km from the central city. It is a self-contained pocket tucked into sloping land between Tawa, Churton Park and the bush of the Belmont hills.
The suburb is a planned one, laid out from the late 1970s and built through the 1980s on what had been farmland. A quirk of that planning survives in the street names, many of which borrow from the Caribbean, with Antilles and Tortola among them, a nod to the Grenada the suburb shares its name with. The houses are mostly of that era, comfortable family homes on the hillsides with views across the valley.
There is no real shopping centre of its own. Residents drop down to Johnsonville for the mall, the supermarkets and the train station, or to Tawa just to the north. A community hall and local reserves serve the immediate neighbourhood, and the motorway puts the central city within a twenty-minute drive outside peak hour.
It is quiet, green and a little out of the way, which is exactly why the people who live there chose it.
