Living in Hamurana
Hamurana is a small rural settlement on the northern shore of Lake Rotorua, around 15 km north of central Rotorua on State Highway 5. It has a population of around 1,200 and a character defined by one of the country's more remarkable natural features: the Hamurana Springs.
Hamurana Springs Recreation Reserve is a 22-hectare reserve where freshwater springs push around four million litres of water per hour to the surface, feeding into the Hamurana Stream and then into Lake Rotorua. The water is cold, clear and impossibly blue, with the deepest spring (the Dancing Sands) descending around 15 metres into a crystal pool. The reserve has walking paths, a tūī-and-tree-laden Redwood grove and one of the most genuinely beautiful short walks in the country.
The Hamurana shops are compact: the Hamurana Store, the local takeaway and a small mix of rural retail. Most residents work in Rotorua or on the surrounding farms. The Hamurana Golf Course on Tauranga Direct Road provides the local sports anchor.
Hamurana Primary School handles the local kids. Older students bus into Rotorua. Hot in summer, with the springs flowing at a constant 10°C year-round.
