Ikawai is a locality in the Waitaki Valley's lower reaches, in the North Otago farming country near the Waitaki River mouth where the river's braided channels spread across the wide valley floor before reaching the sea. The Māori name belongs to the river and valley system, acknowledging the waterway's significance in the coastal Otago and North Otago travelling routes that connected the interior to the coast.

The farming around Ikawai is the lower Waitaki's model: irrigated arable cropping and pasture on the wide valley floor, with the river providing both the water that makes the land productive and the wildfowl habitat that the braided channels and wetlands support. The lower Waitaki Valley's archaeology is significant: the river mouth and coastal areas hold moa-bone and early Māori settlement evidence that makes this one of the South Island's archaeologically rich coastal zones.
