Living in Kaiti
Kaiti is the largest suburb of Gisborne, sitting immediately east of the city centre across the Waimata River, in the Tairāwhiti region on the East Coast. It spreads from the river flats up onto the slopes of Titirangi, the hill that looms over the whole bay.
Few suburbs in the country carry as much history. Kaiti Beach is where the Horouta waka made landfall, bringing the ancestors of the region's tangata whenua, and it is also where James Cook first set foot on New Zealand soil in 1769. Titirangi, also called Kaiti Hill, rises behind the beach with walking tracks, a lookout over Poverty Bay to Young Nick's Head, and an observatory near its summit.
The suburb itself is largely residential, a mix of older homes and state housing on the flats and climbing the hill. Local schools serve the primary and intermediate years, with Gisborne's secondary schools across the river in the central city. Everyday shopping sits along Wainui Road and in the Gisborne centre nearby, and the working wharves of Eastland Port sit just around the foreshore at the river mouth.
It holds two of the most significant landings in the country's story, and wears them with almost no fuss at all.
