Living in Kensington

Kensington is a northern Whangarei suburb around 2 km from the CBD, on the rising land between Kamo Road and the Hātea River. It's a settled residential suburb with around 4,500 residents and one defining institution: Kensington Stadium, the home ground of Northland Rugby Union and the Taniwha.

Kensington Park, with the Kensington Stadium at its heart, is where the Northland Taniwha play their Bunnings NPC home games and where most of the region's senior rugby is played. The stadium holds around 25,000 and is the kind of community ground where locals walk to the games. Northland rugby identity runs through here.

The Kensington shops on Kensington Avenue have the standard suburban mix: the Kensington Pharmacy, Kensington Health Centre, Kensington Tavern (a long-running local) and Kensington Fitness gym. Compact and serving the residential streets either side.

Most homes are 1960s and 1970s on flat or gently sloping sections. Kensington School (state co-ed primary) handles the local primary. Older students typically attend Whangarei Boys' High School or Whangarei Girls' High School in central Whangarei.

The suburb shares its name with London's Kensington and has otherwise nothing in common with it. The locals are quietly fine with that.
