State Highway 8 climbs from the Lindis Valley through the open tops in a series of curves that photographers use as foreground and truck drivers use as a gear-change reminder, and the tussock rolling to the skyline in every direction has appeared on so many calendar covers that the pass is effectively its own editorial department.

The nearest petrol is at Omarama on the eastern side and Cromwell on the west, and the SH8 carries enough traffic to make the road interesting in winter conditions that the forecasts sometimes fail to fully capture.
