Living in Maori Hill
Maori Hill sits 3 km northwest of central Dunedin, on the ridge that runs through Roslyn. About 3,800 people live here, mostly in mature villas behind mature trees, on streets that have looked roughly the same since 1930. It's one of those suburbs where the houses have names as well as numbers, and the names predate the numbers.
Highgate runs through as the main spine, continuing north from Roslyn. The Maori Hill shops at the corner of Highgate and Drivers Road do the everyday job: a Four Square, the takeaways, the hairdresser, the Maori Hill Clinic. You can probably guess what most of the other top-searched local terms are. Schools, basically.
Maori Hill School (state co-ed primary) is well-regarded enough that catchment matters in real estate listings. John McGlashan College, an integrated boys' school of long standing, is at the suburb's edge; Columba College (its girls' equivalent) is just over in Roslyn. Wakari Hospital is north. The Town Belt and Northern Cemetery do the boundary work on the eastern side.
The view from upper Maori Hill, looking down to the harbour and across to the Otago Peninsula, is one of the better free things you can do in Dunedin. Bring a coffee.
