Living in Maraenui
Maraenui sits on the flat southern edge of Napier, around 4 km from the city centre and a short distance inland from Marine Parade and the Pacific. The name translates as great marae, and the suburb earns it: more than half of residents identify as Māori, well above the national figure, and te reo is spoken here far more widely than across the country as a whole.
It is one of Napier's post-earthquake suburbs. After the 1931 quake flattened much of the city, the council rebuilt Marewa first, then turned to Maraenui in the mid-1950s, laying roads, drainage and water before the first state houses went up. The result is a suburb of modest single-storey homes on full sections, built for families and still housing them.
The Maraenui Golf Club, just off Marine Parade, is the best-known landmark, an affordable course set in tree-lined surrounds. Pukemokimoki Marae on Riverbend Road is the community's heart, an urban marae named after a hill where the scented mokimoki fern once grew. A medical centre, a pharmacy and a local park sit within walking distance of most homes.
It does not trade on its looks, and it has never pretended to. The people are the point.
