Matua is on the peninsula north of central Tauranga, around 5 km from the city centre, between Otumoetai and the Tauranga Harbour. It's one of Tauranga's older established residential suburbs, with around 5,000 residents and a strong coastal-and-schools character that has held its shape since the 1960s.
Matua Beach Reserve at the suburb's northern tip is the local headland: a small sheltered swimming beach, picnic spots and walking paths along the harbour foreshore. The kind of harbourfront amenity that locals don't really need to advertise.
The Matua shops on Levers Road are the local hub: a New World, the Matua Pharmacy, the Matua Takeaways, a couple of cafés and the standard suburban services. Compact, walkable, and built for the residential streets either side.
Matua School (state co-ed primary) handles the local primary, with most secondary kids attending Otumoetai College. Most homes are 1960s and 1970s brick-and-tile on the standard quarter-acre sections, with peninsula views from one direction or the other in most parts of the suburb. The kind of settled suburb where the streetscape changes slowly and the locals genuinely like it that way.
