Living in Mornington
Mornington is a hill suburb 1.5 km southwest of central Dunedin, on the ridge above the city. It was one of the city's earliest hillside developments, settled in the 1860s and connected to the central city by a cable car from 1883 until 2 March 1957: the last of Dunedin's four cable car lines to give up the ghost. The original tram shed at the top of Eglinton Road is still there if you know what you're looking at.
High Street is the main commercial spine, with the Mornington shops (a Four Square, the local bakery, cafes, takeaways and the standard mix of suburban services) running for a few blocks along the ridge. Mornington Park covers the local recreation. Lookout Point above the suburb has one of the best free views over Dunedin and the harbour, which makes it a popular drive-up-and-stop spot for sunsets.
Mornington School (state co-ed primary, founded 1881) is the main local school. Caversham, Kenmure and Belleknowes border Mornington at its edges. The Town Belt circles around, providing a natural boundary and walking access into the hills.
Most Mornington streets come with a steep approach. Wellington has the wind, Auckland has the traffic, Dunedin has the gradients.
