Living in Mornington
Mornington is a tiny hill suburb on the southern slopes behind Brooklyn, around 4 km from the Wellington CBD. Population just under 900, on an area of 0.30 km², which makes it one of the smaller named suburbs in Wellington and very easy to miss on the way to somewhere else.
It was named in 1878 after the Earl of Mornington (yes, the Duke of Wellington's father - Wellington specialises in obscure naming layers like this), and developed alongside the adjacent suburb of Vogeltown. Most homes were built between 1920 and 1929, which gives the place its inter-war character: weatherboard bungalows, mature trees, narrow streets that defeat large vehicles.
There's no village to speak of. Locals do their shopping in Brooklyn (5 minutes by car) or Berhampore (similar in the other direction). Ridgway School (formerly Mornington School, renamed in 1929 to avoid confusion with the bigger Mornington in Dunedin) handles the primary kids on Mills Road. Mornington Park has sports fields and a playground. The Vogelmorn Precinct, just over the boundary, is the community hub.
Mornington Wellington is small enough that many Wellingtonians can't quite place it on a map. That's part of the appeal. Quiet, unfussy, and not on anyone's must-see list.
