The Nevis Valley runs between the Remarkables and the Hector Mountains, a high basin at around 800 metres that is simultaneously one of the most remote road-accessible valleys in Otago and one of the most famous addresses in the adventure tourism business. The AJ Hackett Nevis bungy hangs 134 metres above the valley floor on a cable car above the Nevis River, a number that remains implausible however many times you read it, and which around 20,000 people per year choose to experience from the inside.
Beyond the bungy, the Nevis is genuine high-country farming country: merino sheep and beef cattle on the tussock-covered faces, with the Nevis River's upper schist gorge cutting through terrain that the gold miners of the 1860s worked with the same optimism as every other Central Otago river and the same eventual outcome. The Nevis Crossing is the valley's historic route between Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago.
The permanent population is a handful of farming families, the seasonal addition of bungy staff, and the visitors making the 45-minute drive from Queenstown on the gravel road that the rental car companies have also heard about. Schools and services are in Queenstown and Cromwell, equidistant at each end of the valley road.
The valley empties onto State Highway 8 near Cromwell at the southern end, and Bannockburn's wine country waits just beyond.
