Newlands is a postwar Wellington suburb on the SH1 motorway corridor, around 9 km north of the central city. It's not a suburb that gets written about much, which is exactly what the locals signed up for. About 6,500 people live here, mostly in 1960s and 1970s housing arranged in the typical Wellington style: cul-de-sacs, hill spurs, and the occasional staircase pretending to be a street.
The local hub is the Newlands Centre on Newlands Road: a New World, the Newlands Medical Centre, the library, the pharmacy, takeaways and the bits and pieces a suburb actually needs. Most residents do their day-to-day shopping here and head into the city for everything else. Nothing flashy, all of it busy.
Newlands College on Bracken Road does the secondary lifting for the wider northern suburbs, with Newlands Intermediate on the same site. Bothamley Park threads along the Pekanga Stream with walking tracks through native bush, mostly empty on weekday mornings and busy with dog walkers at 5pm.
