Ngāpuna is a small Dunedin suburb in the Taieri Plain's southeastern edge, where the flat dairy country meets the first outer suburbs south of Mosgiel, and the locality name reflects the Māori settlement of the plain that preceded the European drainage schemes that turned the swampy Taieri into the productive farmland surrounding it. Around 500 people live in the Ngāpuna area, in the rural-residential fringe that the Taieri Plain generates between Mosgiel and the southeastern city outskirts.

The Taieri Plain here is flat enough to use a spirit level on and productive enough to justify it: dairy farming on the drained lowland, with the Silver Peaks and the Maungatua Range providing the altitude for those who want to look at rather than live on steep terrain. The plain's birdlife reflects the restored wetlands that have returned to the lower Taieri over the last two decades.

Ngāpuna's proximity to Mosgiel provides the practical services that the locality itself doesn't maintain: the schools, the shops, the full community infrastructure that the flat country's population concentration supports five minutes north. The Dunedin city boundary and Mosgiel's services bracket the locality without constraining it.
