Onerahi is a peninsula suburb on the southern side of Whangarei Harbour, around 7 km southeast of the Whangarei CBD. Population around 6,000 and a settled coastal character, with the harbour on three sides and the kind of community feel that comes from being slightly cut off from the rest of the city.
The Onerahi shops on Whangarei Heads Road are the local hub: the New World Onerahi, the Onerahi Pharmacy, the Onerahi Medical Centre and the standard suburban services. Hammer Hardware Onerahi and a row of cafés complete the strip. Onerahi Yacht Club is on the foreshore, a long-running sailing club with regular Saturday racing through summer.
Onerahi was the site of Whangarei's original airport until 1985, when operations moved north to the current Whangarei Airport. The old airfield is now part of the suburb's residential street layout. Some streets are still suspiciously runway-shaped if you look at them on a map.
