Living in Redwood

Redwood sits in northern Christchurch, around 8 km from the central city on the long run of Main North Road between Papanui and Belfast. Around 8,000 people live here, in the 1960s and 70s housing that filled this side of the city in one steady push, plus the newer streets that keep extending the northern frontier.

Redwood's pitch is position. The Northlands mall and Papanui's full retail kit sit five minutes south, the Northwood supermarket hub five minutes north, the airport fifteen minutes west, and the motorway onramps lurk at both ends, which makes Redwood the suburb equivalent of a well-placed chess piece: not flashy, but controlling a lot of squares.

The green escape is better than visitors expect. The Styx Mill Conservation Reserve spreads along the suburb's northern edge, with wetland boardwalks, dog parks and the Styx River doing its quiet work, and Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, home of the reliable kiwi viewing, sits ten minutes away.

Redwood School holds down the local primary years, with most secondary students heading to Papanui High School. The housing remains some of the better value this close to the city's amenities, a fact the first-home buyers worked out years ago. The chess piece keeps advancing.
