St Clair (rarely written as "Saint Clair" except on Google and on Marlborough wine bottles, which are a completely different St Clair) is Dunedin's southern beach suburb, around 4 km southwest of the central city. It runs along the Esplanade facing directly into the Southern Ocean, which means it gets surf, weather, and the kind of seaside drama that Auckland's eastern bays don't.
St Clair Beach is the centrepiece: a 2 km stretch of sand with consistently good surf, the Surf Life Saving club at the eastern end, and the kind of permanent line of black-wetsuit silhouettes in the water that says "Dunedin water temperature, year-round". The St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool is the suburb's iconic landmark: a heated outdoor saltwater pool built into the rocks at the eastern end of the beach, originally opened in 1884 and rebuilt several times since. Open in summer only, but a proper Dunedin institution.
The Esplanade above the beach has the longstanding café and restaurant strip: Starfish, the Esplanade, Hotel St Clair. The St Clair Half Marathon each March is Dunedin's biggest mass-participation event.
St Clair School handles the local primary. Older students attend Bayfield High or central-city schools. Quiet in winter. Loud in summer. Both work.
