Treble Cone is the ski area that Wānaka people point to when Queenstown people mention Coronet Peak, and the comparison is, from their perspective, a satisfactory conversation ender. The mountain's 550 hectares of terrain rises above the Clutha Valley 26 km from Wānaka, with the highest ski area base in New Zealand and a top-to-bottom vertical drop of 700 metres that the intermediate runs don't adequately communicate and the expert terrain absolutely does.
The mountain's claim to the experienced skier's loyalty is the off-piste and the aspect: north-facing bowls that hold snow in the southern sun longer than you'd expect, and a population of serious terrain that the weekend queues don't tend to reach before lunchtime. The drive from Wānaka, partly sealed and increasingly exposed on the final approach, is itself a declaration of intent.
As a locality rather than a ski area, Treble Cone is an address on a steep hill with a chairlift attached: the permanent population is measured in seasonal staff and the occasional patroller who drew the short straw. Wānaka serves the schooling and the groceries, and the mountain closes in late September when the snowpack remembers it's not Switzerland.
The name comes from the triple-pointed summit ridge. It looked like three cones. The surveyor wrote it down.
