Living in Whanganui East
Whanganui East is on the eastern bank of the Whanganui River, the side of the city that grew up around the railway workshops in the late 1800s. It's a tighter, older grid than the suburbs on the western bank, and connects to the city by the Dublin Street Bridge (built 1914) and the Cobham Bridge (1969).
The local anchor is Kowhai Park, a riverside playground with a giant flying saucer, climbing structures, a paddling pool and picnic spots that's been a Whanganui institution for generations of school holidays. The Whanganui East Swimming Pool sits next door for summer.
Whanganui Girls' College, on Jones Street near the Dublin Street Bridge, is the suburb's best-known school. Founded in 1891, it's one of the country's oldest single-sex schools and still going strong. Up the hill from Whanganui East are Bastia Hill (with its 50-metre water tower, hard to miss) and Durie Hill (with the country's only earthbound public elevator, built 1919, which runs up through the hill via a 200-metre tunnel).
Across the river you've got Pakaitore (Moutoa Gardens), the Sarjeant Gallery, and the Royal Whanganui Opera House (1899), New Zealand's last working Victorian theatre.
