Wigram was an air force base from 1923 to 1995, the home of RNZAF pilot training for 72 years and one of the longest-running active military bases in the country. When the base closed, Christchurch did what cities do with closed military bases: turned it into a major new residential and retail development that is now one of the city's busiest suburbs.

The Air Force Museum of New Zealand on Harvard Avenue is the heritage anchor: free public entry, the country's main RNZAF museum, with around 30 historic aircraft in two large hangars including a working Spitfire and a Mosquito. The original 1930s hangars are heritage-listed and form the building's structure.

Wigram Skies, the master-planned residential development on the former runway and base, has added several thousand new homes since 2010. The Silky Otter Wigram boutique cinema, the New World Wigram and the Wigram Skies retail precinct keep the local economy ticking.
