Far North District

The Far North is where the country runs out, in the best way: Cape Reinga at the top, Ninety Mile Beach (which is closer to 88, but who’s counting), the Bay of Islands, and Waitangi, where the nation’s founding document was signed. They call it the winterless north, and the weather mostly plays along.

It’s a big, spread-out district of beaches, kauri forest, small towns and a deep history Māori and Pākehā both. Kerikeri’s the busy hub, the Bay of Islands pulls the tourists, and there are pockets all over where you can buy near the water for money the rest of the country can only dream about.
