The Kerikeri Mission Station at the Kerikeri Basin is one of the most historically significant sites in the country. Kemp House was built in 1821 to 1822 and is New Zealand's oldest surviving European building. The Stone Store, built between 1832 and 1836, is the country's oldest stone building - and still trades goods 190 years on. Both are operated by Heritage New Zealand and open to visitors daily.

The Kerikeri River, with its famous Rainbow Falls and Wharepuke Falls walks, runs through the town. The Kororipo Pā site sits next to the mission, with the relationship between Ngāpuhi chief Hongi Hika and the early missionaries (who lived under his protection from 1819) one of the most consequential in early New Zealand history.
