Horowhenua sits in the handy gap between Kāpiti and Manawatū, close enough to Wellington to commute and cheap enough to make that worth doing. Levin’s the main town, Foxton’s got the old windmill and the river, and there’s market-garden country and quiet beaches in between.

It’s long been the affordable middle ground, the spot people land when the capital prices them out but they’re not ready to leave the lower North Island. The expressway has made the run south a lot less painful, which has only added to the appeal.
