Living in Foxton Beach
Foxton Beach is a small coastal settlement in the Horowhenua, on the South Taranaki Bight where the Manawatū River meets the sea, about 6 km west of Foxton and 35 km southwest of Palmerston North. It is one of those holiday-coast settlements that swells through summer, when the beach and the river mouth draw holidaymakers down from Palmerston North and the wider region, then quietens back to a steady local rhythm the rest of the year.
The settlement's quiet star is the Manawatū Estuary. It is a wetland of international importance, recognised as a Ramsar site, and one of the best birdwatching spots in the country, with around 95 species recorded among the mudflats and channels, including migratory birds that fly in from the northern hemisphere. For visitors it means walkways, big skies and an estuary mouth busy with fishing, water skiing and small boats.
Foxton Beach School serves local primary-age children, with older students travelling the short distance to Foxton and on to Horowhenua's secondary schools. A handful of shops, a surf club and holiday housing make up the settlement, with the historic town of Foxton and its main shopping a few minutes inland.
It is a proper old-fashioned beach settlement, and it has resisted becoming anything fancier.
