South Wairarapa District

Wellington · 21 suburbs

South Wairarapa is wine and weekends-away country: Martinborough laid out around its square and famous for pinot noir, Greytown lined with heritage shopfronts and good coffee, and Featherston sitting at the bottom of the Remutaka hill. Lake Wairarapa spreads out wide and flat to the west.

It’s become the lower North Island’s favourite escape, a string of pretty villages within a long weekend of Wellington, and increasingly within commuting distance for those happy to do the hill. That popularity has pushed prices up, but the lifestyle, vines, villages and big rural skies, is the genuine draw.

There are 29 suburbs and localities across the district. This page lays them out so you can compare properly: who lives where, what it costs, how the schools sit, and how the commute over the Remutaka really works.
