Living in Greytown
Greytown is a small town in South Wairarapa, around 80 km from Wellington over the Remutaka Hill. It was founded in 1854 as the country's first planned inland town, and has held onto its 1850s grid plan along with a remarkable amount of its original Victorian streetscape. Population is around 2,800. Main Street (yes, that's its actual name) is a Category A historic precinct.
The story locally is the food and the wisteria. Greytown's Main Street is lined with mature wisteria trees that erupt into bloom each November, drawing day-trippers from Wellington. Schoc Chocolate, French Baker, the Cabbage Tree Cafe, Saint Andrew Distillery and the Top Pub are all on or just off Main Street, plus a steady run of antique shops, gift stores and one of the better small bookshops in the Wairarapa.
Cobblestones Museum on Main Street is a heritage village with original 1850s buildings: courthouse, wool shed, schoolroom, blacksmith. Soldiers Memorial Park has a grand old playground and a well-used skate park.
Roughly 90 minutes from central Wellington by car, slightly longer by Wairarapa Connection train (the train stops 10 km south at Featherston, with bus connections to Greytown).
