The name comes from a Scottish estate, in the tradition of early Otago runholders who brought their place names with them as luggage and applied them to a landscape that had only the agricultural possibilities in common with the original.

The Kakanui River is within range for fishing access, and the coastal Otago landscape's characteristic combination of flat productive land and dramatic backdrop - the Kakanui Range to the south, the Pacific to the east - makes the working landscape more visually interesting than the agricultural activity alone would suggest.
