Rosebery is a farming locality in the Waitaki district's inland country, in the hill and down land between Oamaru and the Waitaki River valley. The name belongs to the estate-naming tradition of North Otago's early runholders, who found a landscape considerably different from the English and Scottish country houses they were invoking and named it anyway with the confidence of people who had paid good money for the run.

The North Otago landscape around Rosebery is the improved pastoral country that the Waitaki district's farming families have maintained since the 1850s: sheep and cattle on the hill faces, cropping on the better flats, and the infrastructure of a farming community that measures distance to services in tens of kilometres and finds this acceptable.
