Living in Bendigo
Bendigo is a ghost town on the Dunstan Range above the Clutha, and it holds the distinction of being Central Otago's most intact abandoned settlement, which in a district full of impressive ruins is saying something. The stone buildings, crushing batteries and quartz mining infrastructure of the 1860s-80s goldfield cling to the hillside above the Cromwell Basin in a state of preservation that the altitude and the dry Central Otago climate have maintained better than any heritage programme could contrive.
The gold at Bendigo was quartz-reef rather than alluvial, which required capital, machinery and a different kind of patience than the river miners exercised. The crushing batteries that remain on the hillside processed the reef gold, and the settlement that served them included a school, a hotel and the civic density that a viable mining operation of several hundred produces. The population left and the buildings didn't, and the result is one of the most atmospheric heritage walks in the South Island.
The Bendigo Loop Track climbs from the valley road to the settlement and the mine workings above, around three hours return from the car park near Cromwell, with the view across Lake Dunstan and the Cromwell Basin doing its duties at every available angle.
Cromwell's services and schools serve the locality, 15 minutes below.
