Living in Northburn
Northburn is a Cromwell Basin locality on the eastern shore of Lake Dunstan where the Northburn Creek comes down from the Dunstan Range, and it has reinvented itself twice in the last 30 years with a Central Otago pragmatism that the basin has become good at. The first reinvention was forced: the original Northburn settlement was submerged when Lake Dunstan filled in 1993, and the high-country station land above the waterline became the second version. The third version is currently underway, with viticulture establishing itself on the schist terraces above the lake.
Northburn Station's wine operation has brought the locality its most recent identity in the same way that Bannockburn and the Cromwell Basin's other emerging vineyards brought theirs: by growing pinot noir on formerly sheep-and-beef country and finding that the international wine trade had opinions. The views from the Northburn terraces down the lake to Cromwell are the kind that make winery visitors conclude the wine is worth the drive regardless of the wine.
The Lake Dunstan Cycle Trail passes below on the eastern shore, connecting Cromwell to Clyde along the lakeside on one of Otago's newer trail developments. Cromwell's schools and full services are 20 minutes south.
The burn still comes down from the Dunstans. The lake has simply repositioned around it.
