Living in Dannemora
Dannemora is a residential suburb in East Auckland, around 22 km southeast of the city centre and tucked between Botany Downs, Pakuranga and East Tāmaki in the Howick ward. It is one of the city's newer suburbs, a planned development built through the 1990s and early 2000s on what had been farmland.
The name has an odd origin. The developer, Wayne Francis, named it after his horse stud farm near Christchurch rather than after anything local, which is why it carries a name found nowhere else in the area. The houses match that era: brick-and-tile family homes on tidy sections, built in one go for the families who still fill them.
Schooling is the suburb's strong suit. Point View School and Willowbank School cover the primary years, both opened as the suburb grew, and Botany Downs Secondary College took its first students in 2004. The Botany Town Centre, one of the largest shopping centres in East Auckland, is a few minutes away and serves as the wider area's hub for shops, supermarkets and cinemas. Te Irirangi Drive, the broad arterial that runs past the suburb, links it quickly to Manukau and the Southern Motorway.
It was built quickly and on purpose, and for the families it was designed around, that is rather the appeal.
