Living in Galloway
Galloway sits on the Manuherikia River flat between Alexandra and Omakau, where the valley widens enough to support serious orchard and crop production on the river terraces. The locality takes its name from the Scottish district, in the tradition of early Otago settlers who brought their geography with them and applied it to a landscape that had only the mountains in common with the original.
The Manuherikia Valley here is the Central Otago fruit belt in its most productive form: the terraces below the valley walls carry stone fruit orchards in the irrigation-supported density that makes this stretch of the Manuherikia one of the most intensively productive valleys in the country per hectare. The Galloway area's orchards contribute to the apricot and cherry volumes that reach the country's supermarkets and the Cromwell packing sheds from December through March.
Around 300 people live in the Galloway locality, in the farmhouses and workers' cottages of a functioning agricultural community, with the Galloway Domain's sports grounds serving the local recreation. Alexandra's full services are 10 minutes south, and Omakau sits 15 minutes north up the valley.
Children from Galloway attend Alexandra's schools, with the valley road providing a straightforward daily commute through some of the South Island's best-looking orchard country.
